Activity report of the Turrialba volcano

On 24 September 2016, the volcanic activity of the Turrialba is very low. From 18.30 yesterday, 23 September, until 02:30 today the volcano generated a low amplitude of constant volcanic tremors.

At about 3:37 the seismogram of the seismic station, installed in the guard house of the park, shows the record of a minor eruption of short duration, which reached a height unknown . The seismic activity is lower compared to that reported yesterday to 17 hours.

There is no ash falls reports.

Fuego , Guatemala :

In the last hours, the activity of the Fuego volcano, seen changes in its eruptive profile. It was observed from 18 hours a lava flow of 3.5 kilometers long, descending into the Canyon Las Lajas (seen on the webcam) and the maintains of a source of lava 200 meters high.
Exploding activity remained at a frequency of 3 to 4 times per hour, ejecting plumes of ash 4,500 meters hight (14.764 feet) and an ash column extending 10 kilometers long, direction South , Southwest, and West.
It was heard sounds similar to those of a train locomotive.

This activity is effusive and likely to increase in the hours or days ahead, so it is necessary to take precautions.
INSIVUMEH recommends:

At CONRED: to be aware of changes in the activity of the Fuego volcano.
At the Directorate General of Civil Aviation: Take precautions with air traffic in the area of the Fuego volcano, because there are ashes to 4500 meters which spread on 12 kilometers southwest of the volcanic complex.

Nevado Del Huila , Colombia :

Subject: Weekly Bulletin of volcanic activity of the volcano Nevado del Huila

The level of activity of the volcano continues at:
Activity level Yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Analysis and evaluation of information obtained by the monitoring network of the volcano Nevado del Huila, during the week between 14 and 20 September 2016. The Geological Survey of Colombia –  Observatory Volcanological and Seismological of Popayan reports:
During the period evaluated, 123 seismic events were recorded, of which 68 were related to rock fracturing processes (type VT) and 55 with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits. Of these, 54 were classified as long-period events (type LP) and 1 pulse of volcanic Tremor , also of low energy (TR type).

On the images obtained by cameras from Tafxnú, Maravillas, Caloto, La Palma and Verdun, a degassing process of  low level from the volcanic system was observed.
The signals from sensors for monitoring the ground deformation, magnetic fields and infrasonic signals associated with volcanic activity remained unchanged.
Therefore, it is concluded that during the evaluation period, the volcano continued to show stable behavior.
The Colombian Geological Service continues to be alert and report timely to the changes that may occur.

Copahue , Chile :

Activity bulletin of the Copahue volcano.

The level of activity of the volcano is at:
LEVEL YELLOW: changes in behavior of volcanic activity; probable time for an eruption weeks / months.

During this period 956 seismic events, whose twenty-four (24) were classified as volcano-tectonic (VT) associated with rock fracturing process were recorded. Similarly, it was recorded eight hundred thirty-six (836) events associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano, identified as long-period earthquakes (LP) and eighties-six (86) as earthquakes of very long period (VLP). It is highlighted the permanence in the occurrence of the VLPs seismicity.

Regarding the seismic activity type VT, the local magnitude (ML) are less than or equal to M1,4. The highest energy event was located on the eastern flank (E), 11.2 km from the El Agrio crater with a depth of 7.6 km.
In relation to events associated with fluid dynamics, the LP events had a reduced displacement value (RDC) less than 3 cm2, while the VLP type events had reduced displacement value (DRC) under 26 cm2, these events were located around the active crater.

During this period, it is reported constant tremor signal, low energy, associated primarily with the issue of gas as well as sporadic ash emission from the crater El Agio. This signal had a reduced displacement value (DRC) oscillating around 0.7cm2. The dominant frequencies focusing around a band between 1.2 and 2.0 Hz.


The sulfur dioxide emission (S02) recorded by the team DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometry), Triplets station, located 5 km to the east-northeast (ENE) of the active crater, had an average value 1189 ± 732 t / d and a maximum of 2 338 t / d registered on September 7. These values reported are similar to those observed in the previous month, considered moderate for the condition of the volcano.
IP cameras installed near the volcano experienced a constant degassing of the active crater El Agrio, characterized by presenting most of the time, a gray coloring, highlighting the presence of particles. It is sometimes possible to observe a whiter color, indicating the presence of water vapor in the system. It should be noted that it was possible to observe a nighttime glow and strombolian activity restricted to the area of the active crater.
No abnormalities were reported in sulfur dioxide emissions (S02) to the atmosphere in the volcano area.
A thermal alert is reported in the area associated with the volcano during the fortnight, September 8 with a volcanic radiative power (RVP) of 16 MW, which is considered moderate.
