Activity report of the Turrialba volcano
September 22, 2016, 09:00 local time

From 9 am on September 21, 2016, the intermittent emissions of ash, gas and steam from the active crater of the Turrialba volcano persist.
Meanwhile, the Turrialba volcano has had about 20 small eruptive episodes. The eruption of 03h20 on 22 reaches 2000 meters above the crater. The others ranged between 300 and 700 meters high from the top of the active crater.

The last eruption of 3:20 had a continuous tremor signal of about three hours and thirty minutes. After it was registered a decrease in signal amplitude. The wind direction at the time of the eruption of 3h 20 was to the west. It was reported a smell of sulfur and ash falls in various areas of the Central Valley.
At the time of this report, the wind direction at the top of the volcano is in the northwest.

Weekly activity report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 13 to 19 September 2016

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:
During the past week, various monitoring parameters, show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano remains unstable.

Seismic activity related to the fracturing of rocks in the volcanic edifice showed similar behavior, both in number of earthquakes and seismic energy released from the previous week. This seismicity was located mainly in the South-West and to a lesser extent in the sectors Northwest , Northeast, East, Southeast of the Arenas crater. The depths of the earthquakes were between 1.3 and 7.0 kilometers. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 2.4 ML (local magnitude), which corresponds to the earthquake registered on September 13 at 3:23 p.m. (local time) to 3.1 km deep and located in the southwestern sector   compared to the Arenas crater. It is noteworthy that during this past week, several episodes of drumbeat type events occurred, recorded on September 17. In general, these events were characterized as short and low energy level. This type of seismicity is related to the process of growth of domes (1) to the surface

[1] lava dome: a mound of lava (molten rock) viscous is implemented under a volcano emission duct. The domes growth rate can vary from hours to days, years or even hundreds of years, and their volumes can reach tens of meters to several cubic kilometers

Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits was characterized by the appearance of long period earthquakes (LP) and very long period (VLP), pulse of tremors and multiple earthquakes of fluid with different energy levels. It stands a slight increase in seismic recording (LP), tremors pulses with different energy levels and episodes of continuous volcanic tremors, they continue to have low energy levels.

As for the location of the seismicity, it was mainly in the Arenas crater and in nearby sectors. The registration of new seismic signals of this type with higher energy levels, some of these seismic signals being associated with emissions of gas and ash in the atmosphere , whose dispersion depends on the wind conditions in the region is not excluded, as it was confirmed from images captured by the cameras installed in the volcano area and by the reports of officials of the National Natural Park of los Nevados   (NNNP) and of the Geological Survey of Colombia (CGT).

This ash emission process can occur over several days and sometimes several times a day without involving an individual report for each episode.

The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano, respectively, continued to record Changes.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of steam and water gas, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and satellite imagery. In monitoring the satellite images provided by the site Mirova, a thermal anomaly of low energy (1MW) on September 16, was recorded.

The column of gas, steam and ash time to time reached a maximum height of 900 m above the top of the volcano, on September 17. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in compliance with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the west and the northwest of the volcano, which promotes dispersion of the ash on people who are in these directions relative to the volcanic structure.

The volcanic eruption continues.

At night, there is the glow of the lava flows, their number for the last three weeks has risen to five (on the southeast side). A flow continue his descent in a Southwest direction. Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues: there are bursts of volcanic bombs above the summit crater and above the cinder cone into Apakhonchich chute, and strong gas-steam activity of two volcanic centers with emission of different amounts of ash, and the effusing of lava flows along Apakhonchich chute at the eastern flank of the volcano, and at the south-western its flank.

According to satellite data by KVERT, a large bright thermal anomaly was observed in the area of the volcano all week; on 15 and 20-22 September explosions sent ash up to 7 km a.s.l. and ash plumes extended for about 100 km to the south-west, east and south-east from the volcano.

On the 16/18 September on Sheveluch are descended pyroclastic flows about 10 km long.

They borrowed the bed of the river Baydarnoy in its entire top. The temperature at the flow surface is around 30 degrees. At a depth of about 15 cm is 100 degrees. During the recognition, the stream was heavily gassed.

On 20 September (A.Bichenko) has come down another pyroclastic flows in a stream from which they have fled. Analysis of samples of materials produced was made by employees of the Kamchatka vulkanostantsii on September 21. According to seismic data, of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service, emissions of ash and flows of the eruption began at 19 hours UTC on September 18, 2016

Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions, hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. There was a moderate explosive event in the extrusive dome on 18 September, resulting in the collapsed dome blocks and the formation of pyroclastic flows about 10 km long.

Pyroclastic flows deposits were noted at the valley of Baydarnaya river and in the central part of the southern slope of the volcano. Satellite data by KVERT showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week; due to dense meteorological clouds in the area of the volcano on 18 September, ash clouds and plumes were not observed.
