Villarica , Chile :

A total of 2819 earthquakes were recorded; 2785 (2785) were classified as long-period earthquakes (LP) related to fluid dynamics inside the volcano with reduced displacement values (DRC) of less than 8 cm. It was also ranked thirty four events (34) of the type volcano-tectonic (VT) associated with fracturation of rocks. The higher energy event featured a local magnitude (M) equal to 2.7 and was located 4.8 km to the east (E) of the active crater at a depth of 4.5 km
The energy of volcanic tremor (TR), seismic signal associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano, have small values of reduced displacement (DRC) of 3 cm2 in average, which is considered low, while the dominant frequencies were maintained between 1.0 and 2, 1Hz.


The infrasound sensor installed 4 km from the volcano’s crater, recorded minor explosive episodes associated with the surface activity of the lava lake located inside the main crater. The recorded values were below 4 Pa.
Images recorded with IP cameras installed near the volcano on the days of clear or low cloud cover showed a predominantly white degassing with heights of less than 150 m, and a glow when weather conditions have permitted to observ the upper area of the volcano.

According to data obtained from the four (4) GNSS stations that monitor the deformation of the volcano, no significant changes attributable to an increase in the internal dynamics were observed. Oscillations can be observed in the data, higher than the previous periods, which are attributed to climate impacts. This also indicates that the lengths of the control lines that cross the massif, which show slight variations from previous periods are also associated with climatic factors.


On the other hand the data from two (2) inclinometers show variations of small magnitude, which are not compatible with a volcano deformation process during the period.
The data obtained by the Los Nevados and Tralco Station , installed 10 km eastnortheast (ENE) and 6 km East Southeast (ESE) from the active crater, respectively, recorded a value of average emission of sulfur dioxide (S02) of 800 ± 91 tonnes / day with a maximum value of 1197 ± 93 tons / day, reported on August 23 An increase in S02 emissions compared to July was observed, which could be associated with an increase in lava lake and a subsequent increase in the surface activity.

Heat alerts were reported in the volcano area, most of them took place on August 27 with a radiative power (RVP) of 29 MW, which is considered as moderate.

The seismic activity remains around its base level, highlighting the feature of volcanic conduit opening, a phenomenon that has generated an increase occasional of the degassing and the occurrence of minor explosions with subsequent hazards associated with the fall of pyroclastic material in the area adjacent to the main crater. For this reason, we recommend preventively to apply access restrictions in an area near the crater with a radius of 500 m.

The level of volcanic alert remains at GREEN LEVEL.

Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 26,240-33,000 ft (8-10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.



Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues: there are bursts of volcanic bombs above the summit crater and above the cinder cone into Apakhonchich chute, and strong gas-steam activity of two volcanic centers with emission of different amounts of ash, and the effusing of lava flows along Apakhonchich chute at the eastern flank of the volcano, and at the south-western its flank. According to satellite data by KVERT, a large bright thermal anomaly was observed in the area of the volcano all week.


Explosions sent ash up to 7.5 km a.s.l. and ash plumes extended for about 530 km to the south-east, east, north-east, north-west, west and south-west from the volcano. Small ash layers were observed over Koryaksky and Avachinsky volcanoes on 08 September, but the ash cloud  drifted in Avacha Bay and gradually dissipated.

Reventador , Ecuador :


The volcano is maintained with high eruptive activity. During the night, a light was observed in the crater, with blocks that descend from about 1000 m on the slopes of the volcano.

Seismicity: From 11:00 (TL) yesterday until 11:00 (TL) today, it was recorded 41 explosions (EXP), 51 events long period (LP), 11 episodes of tremor emission (TRE) and 15 episodes of harmonic tremor (TRA).


Observations of emissions and ash: At night incandescent blocks have been observed who descended about 1000 meters below the crater. Currently, the volcano is cloudy.
Rain and lahars: No rains were recorded in the volcano area.

This report on a daily basis will be published at 12:00 (TL). In the case of an increase or a change in the behavior of the volcano it will be issued a special report immediately.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered 158 exhalations with steam and gas emissions . Yesterday at 14:50 h an explosion was detected, which produced a 1.5 km high ash cloud which the winds dispersed towards the west . A volcanotectonic seism was also detected yesterday, at 16:22 h, with a magnitude of 1.7. Also 104 minutes of harmonic tremor were registered.

During the night incandescence was observed over the volcano .



Since this morning and upt ot the time of this report the volcano has been visible, with a continuous plume of steam and gases which are dispersed westwards by the prevailing winds .

On August 30, with the support of the mexican NAVY, was carried out an overflight to the volcano  . It was confirmed that the explosions that took place on 27 and 28 August destroyed the dome 69, built on 1st August. Instead it was an internal crater that has an estimated diameter of 300 meters and a depth of 30 meters. Besides intense degassing which is mainly emitted from the crater floor and walls was observed .
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .

This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.
