Activity Summary:
Kilauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit and from its East Rift Zone. The 61g lava flow continues to enter the ocean at Kamokuna and produce scattered surface breakouts of lava on the coastal plain and pali. The flow poses no threat to nearby communities. The summit lava lake level dropped slightly during the past day, in concert with summit deflation, with its surface roughly 40m (131 ft) below the crater rim this morning.

Summit Observations:
The lava lake within the Halema’uma’u Overlook crater remains active and continues to circulate. Deflationary tilt at Kilauea’s summit continued and gradually slowed through the past day. The lava lake level continues to closely mirror the tilt and appears to have dropped slightly from the 39m-level (130 ft) below the floor of Halema’uma’u measured yesterday. No significant changes in seismicity are noted through the past day. Volcanic tremor amplitudes continue to fluctuate in association with lava lake spattering and circulation. Average daily summit sulfur dioxide emission rates ranged from 3,200 to 4,300 metric tons/day over the past week. GPS and InSAR data continue to show long-term inflation of the summit magma reservoir complex, ongoing since 2010.

 Pu’u ‘O’o Observations:
Yesterday , A large breakout occurred at the head of the 61g flow, on the east flank of Pu’u ‘O’o cone yesterday morning at about 08:30. Webcam views show that the breakout was active overnight . Webcam views show a decrease in surface lava activity related to the recent breakout from Pu’u ‘O’o’s east flank. Webcams also show persistent glow continuing at the long-term sources within the crater. There was no significant change in seismicity during the past day. The tiltmeter on Pu’u ‘O’o cone has reversed from its recent slow deflationary tilt trend to now reflect a small amount of possible re-inflation. The sulfur dioxide emission rate from all East Rift Zone vents was about 270 metric tons/day when last measured on August 25.

Lava Flow Observations:
The 61g lava flow continues, extending southeast of Pu’u ‘O’o on Kilauea’s south flank, with lava entering the ocean near Kamokuna along a front spanning about 1 km (0.6 mi) of coastline. Scattered breakouts continue, predominantly on the pali and the makai (seaward) portion of the coastal plain.

People who venture too close to Kilauea’s Kamokuna ocean entry—by land or by sea—are at risk from multiple hazards associated with lava flowing into the sea. The white plume formed by the interaction of lava and seawater is a corrosive mixture of super-heated steam, hydrochloric acid, and tiny particles of volcanic glass, all of which should be avoided. Lava deltas (new land formed at the ocean entry) can collapse without warning. Should the lava delta shown here collapse, fragments of molten lava and blocks of hot rock would be thrown both inland and seaward, potentially impacting people on the cliff above the ocean entry and in the boat in front of the delta.

Weekly activity report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 23 August to 30 August 2016

The level of activity continues:
At Yellow or (III) activity level  : changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:

During the last week, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continued to record seismic activity related to the fracturing of the rock inside the volcano and fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits.

The recording of earthquakes associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice has increased slightly compared to the previous week. This type of seismicity is mainly located in the seismogenic sources of the Northwest, Southwest, Northeast distal and Southeast, as well as, to a lesser extent, in the Arenas crater and in the Northwest distal zone of the volcano, at depths between 1.6 and 6.2 km. The occurrence of a minor increase seismic character stands out and low energy levels are recorded on August 25, located in the northwest sector of the volcanic edifice, at depths between 4.1 and 5 6 km. The earthquake  recorded with the utmost energy, on Aug. 28 at 2:16 p.m. (local time), with a maximum magnitude of 1.5 ML (local magnitude), was located in the southeast area, 7.1 km from the crater and at a depth of 2.8 km.

Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was mainly characterized by the appearance of long period earthquakes (LP) and very long period (VLP), pulses of volcanic tremors and  multiple earthquakes of fluids, all with varying energy levels. Short episodes of continuous volcanic tremor of low energy levels were also recorded. Some of the seismic signals were associated with gas emissions and ash into the atmosphere. Recording these seismic signals with higher energy levels that can be associated with gases and ash into the atmosphere, which can be dispersed according to the wind conditions prevailing in the region is not excluded.

The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano, respectively, continued to record changes.

The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and on satellite imagery. In monitoring the satellite images provided by the site Mirova, two thermal anomalies in the volcano area on 24 and 29 August with the values of 1 and 3 MW respectively, were identified.

The column of gas, steam and ash from time to time, reached a maximum height of 2300 m above the top of the volcano, on August 29 The direction of the dispersion of the column was in compliance with the prevailing wind in the area, which, during the week, showed a predominant direction towards the west and northwest of the volcano, which promotes scattering of the ashes on the people who are in these directions relative to the volcanic structure.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered 60 volcanotectonic events. The strongest was recorded today at 01:11 h con a magnitude of 3, located at the southeast sector. These events belongs to the swarm that that began last Monday at 11:24 h. At the time of this report they have been counted 366 of these earthquakes.

On the other hand, there were registered 113 low-intensity exhalations, with emissions of steam and gas and one explosion yesterday at 15:02 h. Besides there were recorded 198 minutes of low-amplitude harmonic tremor.

Yesterday, with the support of the mexican NAVY, was carried out an overflight to the volcano . It was confirmed that the explosions that took place on 27 and 28 August destroyed the dome 69, built on 1st August. Instead it was an internal crater that has an estimated diameter of 300 meters and a depth of 30 meters. Besides intense degassing which is mainly emitted from the crater floor and walls was observed.

Overnight was observed incandescence, increasing with main exhalations .

At the time of this report the volcano is observed with a non-stop emission of steam and gas that the winds scatter southwest .

CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .

This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.

Colima , Mexico :

At 7h58, on 27/08 ,an exhalation occur, from an altitude of 1,000 meters, directed vertically.

At 10h20 on 29/08 , an exhalation occur, from an altitude of 2,000 meters, directed vertically. Beware of possible ash fall in the region.

The Colima also presented a beautiful explosion on August 29,2016 around 10h10.

The volcano continues at Semaphore Yellow level.
