Since 1 July 2016, the OVPF recorded :

26 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (0 to 2 km away under the surface) below the summit craters; mainly between 8 and 14 July (11 on 13 July and 8 on July 14th at 18:00);
12 local earthquakes (in the island);
111 collapses (in the Dolomieu Crater, at the bulwark of Enclos Fouque and on the flow of August-October 2015).



Inflation recorded after the eruption of 26-27 May 2016 stopped in mid-June . Since July 13, 2016, a resurgence of inflation is recorded and must be confirmed in the coming days.

Geochemistry of gas:
SO2 emissions at the summit of the volcano remain below the detection threshold.
CO2 concentrations in the soil in the far field (Plain of Cafres) remained stable at high values since the end of the last eruption.

San Cristobal , Nicaragua :

The San Cristobal volcano maintains a micro-seismicity associated with volcanic fluid movement that is registered under the volcano.
This activity is part of the normal behavior of an active volcano.

The rest of the measurement parameters of volcanic activity are within the normal range.

Chaparrastique , El Salvador :

The degassing of the crater of Chaparrastique volcano gradually decreased, a plume of gas and fumes from the crater moderately persists. Despite this observation, the analysis of sulfur dioxide stream that continues to be emitted is high. Data collected by the DOAS station in the municipality of San Jorge, remained above 800 tonnes per day, indicating that the degassing of a magma body still inside the volcano with the conditions of a channel output without many obstacles.

In the last 24 hours, the seismic vibration of the volcano, recorded by the seismic station VSM, located at 1700 m on the northern flank of the volcano has fluctuated between 75 and 138 units RSAM / hour, with an average of 99 units, showing a downward trend in recent days.


The air quality station, installed in La Piedra, three kilometers west of the volcano’s crater, measures the concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the air. The analysis of data recorded during the last seven days shows that during most of the recording, there were conditions of « good » air, and for short periods, « moderate«  conditions and « unhealthy for vulnerable people. « 


The gases emitted by the volcano’s crater are transported by wind direction and residents of the communities near the volcano may perceive a smell of sulfur. Therefore, the use of masks or wet tissues is recommended, as well that also the abandonment of the affected area when this condition is present.

Turrialba , Costa Rica :

OVSICORI-UNA reported that strong tremor at Turrialba started at 06h58 on 7 July. An accompanying explosion produced an ash plume that rose 1 km above the crater and likely drifted WNW and WSW. Weather conditions mostly prevented views of the crater, although at 15h51 a large amount of water-vapor-and-gas emissions with minor amounts of ash were observed. Ashfall was recorded in areas downwind including in neighborhoods of San José (Coronado, La Uruca, Tibás, Rancho Redondo, Guadalupe, Sabanilla, Moravia, Ipís, Sabanilla, La Guácima of Alajuela, and San Rafael de Alajuela), Heredia (38 km W), and Turrubares. Almost continuous tremor was detected through the next day; a period of increased tremor amplitude was detected during 10h30-12h30.


Emissions of gas, water vapor, and large amounts of ash were visible with the webcam. Ash fell in many of the same areas as the day before. Tremor levels dropped at 20h30, though increased again at 00h30 on 9 July. Ash emissions rose no higher than 500 m above the crater around 09h00 on 9 July. Ash emissions to 300 m above the crater and elevated tremor levels continued throughout the day. Ashfall was reported in Ipís de Guadalupe and San Rafael de Heredia. Tremor significantly declined at 01h15 on 10 July. Views of the crater at 0600 showed emissions of water vapor and gas with minor amounts of ash. Tremor again increased on 11 July, at 09h30, and a possible ash emission occurred between 10h00 and 10h30, although weather conditions prevented confirmation.


On July 13 2016, from 11:00 to 17:00, the seismograph network recorded a moderate increase of the amplitude of volcanic tremor of the Turrialba volcano. This seismic activity has been associated with the detection of a slight increase in atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) and particulate or aerosol for PM2.5 and PM10 , coinciding with sporadic small amounts of ash observed between 1:22 p.m. and 18:00 through the webcam located on the volcano. gases and sprays sensors monitoring of the station of OVSICORI-A, located temporarily in the Omar Dengo Campus of the National University of Heredia detected last July 13 at 13:00 this increase.

From 18:00 on July 13 until 14:00 on July 14, 2016, it was not possible to observe the emission of ashes. Seismic activity and degassing level of the Turrialba volcano remained rather low, according to records from the network of seismographs, infrasound instruments and webcam of OVSICORI and according to all the instruments dedicated to surveillance of the volcano Turrialba
