Weekly  bulletin of activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from June 28 to July 4, 2016

The level of activity continues at:
 Activity level Yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:

During the last week, the Nevado del Ruiz presented , compared to the previous week, a slight decrease both in the seismic activity associated with the fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits and the seismicity related to the fracturation of the rock inside the volcano.

Earthquakes associated with the fracturing of the rock inside the volcano, were mainly in the seismogenic sources of the proximal and distal of the North, Nor-East and to a lesser extent, in the South-West, the West and near the Arenas crater at depths ranging from 0.8 to 8.3 km. The earthquake of greatest energy was recorded on July 2 at 4:23 (local time) with a maximum magnitude of 1.2 ML (local magnitude) at a depth of 5.2 km, and located in the area East- southeast of the volcano.

Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was characterized by the appearance of long period earthquakes (LP) and very long period (VLP), pulses of tremor and multiple earthquakes of fluid with different energy levels.

 Some of the seismic signals have been associated with the processes of ash emissions into the atmosphere. A slight increase of the recording pulses of tremor with significant energy levels and a decrease in the recording episodes of continuous volcanic tremors , these latter having continued to have low energy levels, is highlighted. As for the location of this type of seismicity, it was mainly recorded in the crater, next to this sector and in the South and Southeast of the volcano area. The registration of new seismic signals of this type with higher levels of energy and emissions of ash in the atmosphere, which can be dispersed depending on wind conditions in the region is not excluded.

The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and the shape of the volcano, respectively, continued to record changes.

The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is distinguished as it was estimated by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the volcano area and satellite imagery. In the monitoring of the satellite images provided by the site Mirova, no thermal anomaly has been identified.
The column of gas, steam and ash, from time to time, reached a maximum height of 850 meters above the summit of the volcano, on June 28 The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest of the volcano.

Poas , Costa Rica :

The Poas Volcano experienced a phreatic eruption this afternoon, at 14h27. A column of 200 meters above the level of the acid lake of the active crater has risen. A phreatic eruption is the compound of the emission of steam and rock fragments, without emission of magmatic products, which occurs as a result of heating of groundwater by a magmatic concentration

The broad, well-vegetated edifice of Poás, one of the most active volcanoes of Costa Rica, contains three craters along a N-S line. The frequently visited multi-hued summit crater lakes of the basaltic-to-dacitic volcano, which is one of Costa Rica’s most prominent natural landmarks, are easily accessible by vehicle from the nearby capital city of San José. A N-S-trending fissure cutting the 2708-m-high complex stratovolcano extends to the lower northern flank, where it has produced the Congo stratovolcano and several lake-filled maars. The southernmost of the two summit crater lakes, Botos, is cold and clear and last erupted about 7500 years ago. The more prominent geothermally heated northern lake, Laguna Caliente, is one of the world’s most acidic natural lakes, with a pH of near zero. It has been the site of frequent phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions since the first historical eruption was reported in 1828. Eruptions often include geyser-like ejections of crater-lake water.

Activity:
A light white plume is observed at a height of 4200 meters. (13,779feet), which is dispersed to the West and Southwest. It was reported 18 explosions,  7 low and 11 moderate, with columns generated gray colour, at a height of about 4300-4700 m. (14,107 to 15.419 feet) moving towards the West and Southwest.
Incandescent pulse above the crater, at a height of approximately 100 to 150 meters, generating low to moderate avalanches around the edge of the crater were observed, as well as moderate rumbling with low shock wave and a noise like a turbine airplane, with intervals of 2 to 6 minutes.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

July 5, 11:00 h (July 5, 16:00 GMT)

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered 138 low-intensity exhalations. Also, two explosions were recorded yesterday at 13:48 h and 14:05 h . The ash columns reached heights of 1500 m and 1200 m, respectively. These ash emissions were displaced towards the west. No reports of this material have been received from nearby communities.

During the night incandescence was observed above the crater.

At the time of this report the visibility is reduced due to dense clouds. However, at previous hours a continuous steam-and-gas emission was observed .
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .
This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.
