Eruption with emission of pyroclastic flows of Santiaguito volcano.

Santiaguito volcano continues its high activity phase with two loud explosions recorded by the seismic station as shown in picture No. 1 of the  pyroclastic flow . These explosions have generated pyroclastic flow downhill on the southern flank and the south – East side to the base of the dome.
The collapse of the eastern edge of the Caliente dome made  a column of gray ash 4,500 meters to the west, the southwest and the south, to a distance of 30 km, with a tendency to increase.
It is estimated that due to the fine ash that it can reach the same distance as the other events.

There are ashfall reports on the finca Monte Bello, El Faro, Aldeas Loma Linda, San Marcos Palajunoj, Las Marias, El Nuevo Palmar, a few minutes on San Felipe Retalhuleu and other regions. Due to the variations of wind, ash falls are not excluded in the city of Quetzaltenango.
Santiaguito volcano is in a high phase eruptive, so more or less similar events may be generated in the hours and \ or upcoming days. So we should not remain near the volcanic complex because it can generate pyroclastic flows with the same or higher power.

Therefore, the INSIVUMEH recommends:
At the CONRED to take precautions on the alertness, the implementation deems necessary for precautions with the air near the volcanic complex, mainly because of the ash fall which can contaminate water drinking and cause respiratory problems.
At the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to take precautions with air traffic, such as ash moves in directions West, Southwest and South to 4,500 meters above sea level, with a potential to be transported over distances of 50 kilometers.

Santiaguito volcano maintains the highest level of explosive activity in recent years, with violent eruptions, accompanied by ash plumes that reach 4500 to 5.000 m. They move in the direction of the wind over 60 kilometers, which gives ash fall in the departments of Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Mazatenango. The villages near the volcano, San Marcos and Loma Linda Palajunoj, Las Marias, El Palmar, San Felipe Retalhuleu, the finca Monte Bello, Monte Claro, El Faro, Patzulin, Florida, are
directly affected by abundant ash fall.

These eruptions generate pyroclastic flows towards the East and West, in the riverbeds Cabello Angel and San Isidro, with a length of 3 km. This activity was accompanied by rumbling and shock waves.
As mentioned at the beginning, this explosive activity is the highest recorded in the past two years, began in February with 6 events until late March with 31 eruptions that restarts since April 22.

 

 

It is necessary to mention that the recorded eruptions observed in the last four days, are more violent, with the expulsion of ballistic projectiles of various sizes and even volcanic bombs of 2 and 3 meters in diameter at a distance of 3 km .
So there is the possibility to generate violent eruptions, similar or higher than that of May 9, 2014.

 

 

 

 


 

CONRED, must take into consideration that the activity of Santiaguito volcano increases in energy, it is possible to generate similar or larger eruptions .It is therefore necessary to take precautions deemed necessary and maintain the state of alert. The villages of Loma Linda and San Marcos Palajujoj are most affected by ash falls, constants that can cause breathing problems, stomach problems and affect the view of the people.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO reports:

During last week, the seismic activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano was mostly associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice, showing an increase both in number of events and energy released by now the trend reported the previous week. Earthquakes were mainly located in the North distal area, about 7.0 km from the Arenas crater at depths between 6.0 and 8.0 kilometers.

And in the Northern Zone, to 4.0 km on average of the Arénas crater, with depths between 4.0 and 6.0 km, and in an area 3.5 km away to the east of the crater, to depths between 4.0 and 6.0 km. The maximum amplitude of the week corresponds to the earthquake registered on April 13 at 22:48 (local time), with a magnitude of 3.0 ML (local magnitude), located in the North distal area at a depth of 7.4 km. Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was characterized by the occurrence of earthquakes long period (LP) and very long period (VLP). Continuous volcanic tremor episodes were also recorded,with low energy levels and pulse mode with different energy levels, some of them associated with process of emission of ash  . These events have been located in the Arenas crater and in the Southeast sector of the volcano.
The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively), continues to show changes that are recorded.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of steam and water gas, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and satellite imagery.

In the monitoring of satellite images provided by the site Mirova, some thermal anomalies near the Arenas crater were identified during the week. The largest anomaly was reported on 16 April, with a value of 21 Mw. The persistence of these anomalies confirms the instability of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano and confirmed the volcanic process continues to evolve.

The column of gas, steam and ash reached a height of 1,500 meters above the summit of the volcano. This height corresponds to the vapor column of April 12. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest and northeast of the volcano.

Popocatepetl , Mexique :

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered 262 low-intensity exhalations, which produced small emissions of gas and steam. Also were registered 7 low-intensity explosions and 230 minutes of a low amplitude harmonic tremor were identified.
During some periods of the night, when the cloudy conditions, allowed, blow was observed over the crater, at the time of some exhalations .

At the time of this report there is no visibility towards the volcano.
Other monitoring parameters remain unchanged.

From dawn the volcano has been noticed a faint but not stopping emission of steam and gas that winds blow about northeast , however, at the time of this report, the cloudy conditions not allowed to observe the volcano.
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .
This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.

Explosive volcanic eruption of Strombolian type continues. Satellite data by KVERT showed an intensive thermal anomaly over the volcano all week. Strong explosions sent ash up to 8-9 km a.s.l. near 13:40 UTC on 23 April, and ash cloud continues to drift to the south-west of the volcano. At 02:28 UTC on April 24, the leading edge of the ash cloud is an estimated 453 km south-west of the volcano.

Explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700-26,240 ft (6-8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

« The eruption was detected by seismic sensors, satellite images show that the eruption column rose 6 kilometers [3.7 miles] above the sea level, » a representative of the Russian agency told RIA Novosti.

The volcanic ash cloud has spread over an area of almost 13,500 square feet. It has drifted 124 miles southeast toward the Sea of Okhotsk, in the Pacific Ocean.
There was no immediate threat to the public safety. Ash was blown away from nearby towns, emergencies services in the Kamchatka region said.
The 15,580-feet volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula has been rumbling to life since the beginning of April. It has been almost continuously active for the past 50 years but the number of tremors and ash eruptions has been on the rise lately.
