The activity level of the volcanic complex is at: YELLOW, changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
probable time for an eruption weeks / months.

Based on the analysis of information obtained from monitoring equipment and surveillance of the volcanic complex, the National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) through the Volcanological Observatory of Southern Andes (OVDAS) communicates :
During this period, fifteen (15) events in connection with rigid materials fracturing processes (called volcano – tectonic, VT), with the largest local magnitude (ML) of M 1.1 . , Located 1.1 km to the south-southeast (SSE) of the main crater were recorded.

 


Similarly 4787 events earthquakes associated with fluid dynamics inside the volcano (called long period, LP), with a local magnitude (ML) of less than M 1.1 and are reduced displacement values (DRC ) less than 4.4cm2 were classified.
The images from the IP camera show no clear evidence of surface activity.

Images published by the Group Sulphur dioxide ((instrument to monitor ozonehttp://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) and NESDIS (National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information, IMO group Http: // satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov) reported no abnormality of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere in the volcanic complex area .
Thermal radiation released by the MODVOLC (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) MODIS on its website (http://modis.higp.hawaii.edu/) and Mirova (Middle InfraRed Observation of Volcanic Activity) on its website (http: / /www.mirovaweb.it/) monitoring indicates significant changes in surface temperature, reported no heat alert in the area associated with the volcanic complex.

There are no reports of local authorities or communities about anomalies seen in the volcanic area.
Although the recorded events have low energy levels, the high rate of daily appearance of this type of seismicity which is maintained since the beginning of February continues, suggesting an excitation of the volcanic system above the level reference.
In this scenario, there is a possibility of occurrence of small ash emissions. Therefore, the volcanic alert level remains at Yellow.

Rincon De La Vieja , Costa Rica :

During last week the Rincón de la Vieja has had some small explosions that ejected ash in the area near the volcano. This is the first sign of activity of the volcano from a brief period in September 2014. No explosion was particularly important, with a small ash plume that rose less than a kilometer above the volcano.
Volcanologists from the OVSICORI oversight agency of the volcanoes of Costa Rica visited the Rincon de la Vieja to get a better view of the recent unrest. They found a number of small ash deposits linked to other steam explosions that have occurred since the beginning of 2016 (probably small enough to go unnoticed, especially if they were obscured by clouds).

The most interesting thing they found was that the ash from the explosions, even though most are pieces of rocks and pieces of pre-existing sulfur, contain a small part of what appears to be fresh lava in the form of small bursts of volcanic glass (obsidian). This suggests that there might be a magma body which is not hiding too far below the summit crater lake of the Rincón de la Vieja.

The lake in the summit crater emits more magmatic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide over the last few years and is also more warm (45-55ºC). Just like the glass in the ashes, these changes in the lake suggest to OVSICORI there could be magma nears the surface.

What is most important is the concern of the OVSICORI about these changes in the Rincón de la Vieja which could mean that the volcano entered in a more dangerous period, with potential for large explosions and production of lahars ( flows of volcanic mud) increasing. This means that people living near the volcano need to keep close attention to how the volcano behaves.
The last major eruption of the Rincón de la Vieja was an eruption of VEI 3 in 1966, even though it produces numerous small explosions in the half century since the eruption. In Costa Rica, Poas and the Turrialba were much more active in the last two years. The most famous volcano in Costa Rica, Arenal, was surprisingly quiet since 2010 after 32 years of almost continuous eruption.

An intensive thermal anomaly was detected over Alaid volcano on March 22, 02:41 UTC (Aqua MODIS). Weak ash emission extended about 60 km to the north-west from the volcano was observed on satellite image (Aqua MODIS) on March 22, 02:41 UTC.
A moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700-26,240 ft (6-8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

The highest and northernmost volcano of the Kuril Islands, 2285-m-high Alaid is a symmetrical stratovolcano when viewed from the north, but has a 1.5-km-wide summit crater that is breached widely to the south. Alaid is the northernmost of a chain of volcanoes constructed west of the main Kuril archipelago and rises 3000 m from the floor of the Sea of Okhotsk. Numerous pyroclastic cones dot the lower flanks of basaltic to basaltic-andesite Alaid volcano, particularly on the NW and SE sides, including an offshore cone formed during the 1933-34 eruption. Strong explosive eruptions have occurred from the summit crater beginning in the 18th century. Reports of eruptions in 1770, 1789, 1821, 1829, 1843, 1848, and 1858 were considered incorrect by Gorshkov (1970). Explosive eruptions in 1790 and 1981 were among the largest in the Kuril Islands during historical time.

Based on satellite images, ground reports, and information from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 9-10 and 13-15 March ash plumes from Sinabung rose to altitudes of 3.6-4.9 km (12,000-16,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 25-55 km NW, W, and SW.

On March 22, 2016 at 18:07an eruption accompanied by a cloud of hot avalanches with high ash column rising to 2500 meters, with pyroclastic avalanches that came down on a distance of 2000 meters to the East -South-East was recorded. The wind was calm, to the eastsoutheast.
