Activity Bulletin of the Tungurahua volcano, Sunday, March 20, 2016

The activity of the volcano is moderate.
Weather conditions in the sector have not allowed the observations of the activity on the surface.
From 11:00 (TL) yesterday until 11:00 (TL) today 2 episode of tremor emission (TE) and 23 long period (LP) events were recorded.



Observations emissions and ashes:
The volcano sector remained covered, it was not possible to observe the surface activity.
Currently, the weather is overcast continuously.
Rain and lahars:
Some rain were recorded in the sector without generating lahars.
If the rains are more intense in the volcano area, they can re-mobilize the deposits of pyroclastic flows and generate lahars . For this reason, we recommend extreme caution when driving on roads and highways that cross the gorge through which these flows are down and the regions which in the past have been affected by this kind of phenomenon.

San Miguel ( Chaparrastique ) , El Salvador :

Special Report No. 5: The recorded seismic activity on the volcano Chaparrastique has subtle changes.
Friday, March 18, 2016 5:18 p.m.

From 7:00 Wednesday, March 16, until the publication of this report, the seismic vibrations of the Chaparrastique volcano continued to show fluctuations. The network of seismic stations recorded since yesterday morning, the occurrence of earthquakes associated with small explosions in the volcanic conduit.
In the last 24 hours, the seismic tremor has fluctuated between 131 and 192 units RSAM / hour, with an average of 156 units, the maximum threshold of normal behavior is 150 units.




The images captured by the surveillance camera located on the Cerro El Pacayal show that the top of the volcano is still very cloudy most of the time, however, for short periods, emission of small gas pulses from the crater were observed, which do not exceed more than 150 meters, and rising rapidly dissipate under the influence of winds. Meanwhile, the network of local observers did not report anomalies in the region.

The network of seismic stations registered on the volcano between 04 h 23 and 05 h 15 this morning, the presence of six seismic signals associated with small bubble bursts inside the volcanic conduit.
These small earthquakes were located on the north side of the volcano with magnitudes between M1,4 and M1, at depths of less than 1 km.



The MARN continues its enhanced surveillance of the volcano, maintains close communication with the General Directorate of Civil Protection and local observers.
These periodic changes in the volcano’s behavior indicates that it remains active, without excluding future activity, either by the central crater or his flanks.
MARN invites journalists and people not to approach the summit of the volcano, because of the degree of danger it presents.

Bulusan, Philippines :


Bulusan Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded fifty five (55) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Wispy emission of white steam plumes that drifted west-northwest was observed. Precise leveling survey results from February 23-28, 2016 indicated slight deflationary changes of the volcano’s edifice relative to December 2015, consistent with ground deformation measurements from continuous GPS data since February 2016.



Alert Level 1 (abnormal) remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano. This indicates that hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to steam-driven eruptions. The local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

March 20, 11:00 h (March 20, 17:00 GMT)

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered three low-intensity exhalations. The atmospheric conditions allowed to observe the emissions that wind carried to the east .
Along the night was observed slight incandescence, increasing when main exhalations .



From dawn and up to the time of this report it has been noticed that wind carried the emission to the east .
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments.

This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.
