A series of magnitude earthquakes up to 4.1 on the Richter scale in the Masaya volcano, triggered yesterday, evacuation plans, for public institutions and schools in Nicaragua for a potential situation of emergency, said the national system of prevention, mitigation and emergency disaster (SINAPRED).
At least four shallow earthquakes took place Tuesday afternoon on the volcano and alarmed the populations of the cities of Managua, Masaya, Ticuantepe Nindirí and Nicaragua Pacific region.

« The institutions have implemented their evacuation plans (…) schools implemented their plans for school safety and led students to safe areas, » said the co-director of SINAPRED, Guillermo Gonzalez, at a news conference.
Authorities reported no damage or casualties due to earthquakes. However, the official did not rule out that these shocks are prescient, for « a possible increase in activity« , in reference to the Masaya volcano.
« We live in a country where the danger of earthquakes is latent, so we must be prepared for circumstances like these, » he added.

The Centre for Disaster Operations (CODE) has been activated and the authorities issued rules of behavior before an earthquake, among them one, stay calm and seek safety.
Masaya Volcano, located 23 kilometers southeast of Managua, has grown its activity since last December, when a « magma lake«  was formed in the crater.
Since then, several earthquakes have their origin in the volcano area.
The Masaya Volcano National Park, which annually attracts thousands of tourists by offering a privileged view of the crater was closed to the public on 30 January, following an increase in activity.

The latest report on volcanic activity, provided by the Coordinator of the Communication and Citizenship Council , Rosario Murillo, said « micro seismicity relatively strong under the Telica volcano is recorded.
In this regard, the experts of the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) do not exclude the possibility of explosions that produce expulsions of gas , ash and hot rock fragments.

Rosario said that at present, with the gas emissions in the volcano, a faint glow was visible in the crater.
In the last hours, three small explosions were recorded on the Momotombo, the last at 6:40 Tuesday morning with low emissions, totaling 341 explosions since the beginning of its eruptive phase.
The report also says that in recent times there have been three earthquakes with a magnitude between M1 and M 2,2. While the Masaya maintains its activity on the lava lake.

Regarding earthquakes, it was reported the appearance of movements in the past 16 hours, including 13 on local faults and the rest on the coast.
« Other experts INETER and all of us SINAPRED, keep the alert, vigilance and monitoring. The recommendations should be relayed to be aware of alerts, information, and we must be active. All our district committees in Managua and the mayor of Managua, are activated, so that we know what to do, we can communicate, we can follow the instructions that are necessary, « he said.

4 earthquakes also occurred near the Concepcion volcano, one being of greater magnitude (M2.8). Three near the Momotombo volcano, with magnitude greater than 2.2 M; and one near Puerto, 3.1 degrees.
In the Pacific Ocean an earthquake measuring M 3.2 was recorded in the southeast of Corinth; two off the peninsula Cosigüina , of 3.6 degrees.

Nevados de Chillan , Chile :

Activity bulletin of the volcanic complex Nevados de Chillan (March 1 to 15).
The level of activity of the volcanic complex is at:
  LEVEL YELLOW: changes in the behavior of volcanic activity – likely time for an eruption weeks / months.

Based on the analysis of information obtained from monitoring equipment and supervision of the volcanic complex, the Servicio Nacional de Geologia y Mineria (SERNAGEOMIN) Volcanológico Observatorio de Los Andes del Sur (OVDAS) announces:

845 seismic events were recorded, of which seventy-five (75) were related to rigid materials fracturing process, called volcano-tectonic earthquakes (VT) with maximum local magnitude (ML) 2.5. It was recorded seven hundred and seventy (770) events associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano, called long-period events (LP) with a local magnitude of M 3.1 and a reduced maximum displacement value (DRC) than 300 cm2.
During the first 3 days of the month, a continuous tremor was registered, but with a small amplitude , associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano, with an average reduced displacement value of 0.5 cm2.

The sulfur dioxide emissions (SO2) recorded on the Nevados de Chillán by equipment DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometry), Chillan Station, located 3 km to the east-northeast (ENE) of the active crater presented a mean value of 1136 ± 346 t / day and a maximum value observed during the first two weeks of 2204 t / day, recorded on March 14.
In particular, due to the pulsating nature of the eruption process, the values ​​of SO2 have high variability. Intermittent degassing of SO2 emissions in the process, was tested and rated  by infrared (IR) camera, which has recorded flux values ​​of SO2 near the detection limit , in the order of 20 tons / day.


Based on the analysis of data provided by two (2) electronic inclinometers and four (4) GNSS stations that monitor surface deformation of volcanic complex, no fluctuations were related to changes in the internal activity of the volcano during this period.

The images obtained by the camera network installed in the region, showed surface activity characterized mainly by issuing a whitish plume associated with water vapor, except for March 3 and it was seen small emission of ash during the term of the above tremor period.
In addition, with the largest event LP (ML 3.1) that occurred during the hours of the night of 9, it was possible to see a glow in the area of active craters.

The images published by the Sulfur Dioxide Group (Ozone Monitoring Instrument – http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) and NESDIS (National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information – http: // satepsanone NESDIS.. noaa.gov) does not report any anomaly in the sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere in the area near the volcanic complex.

Thermal radiation released by the MODVOLC (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) MODIS on its website (http://modis.higp.hawaii.edu/) and Mirova (Middle InfraRed Observation of volcanic activity) on its website (http : // www.mirovaweb.it/), surveillance systems that indicate significant changes in surface temperature, have not reported thermal alerts in the region associated with the volcanic complex.

Monitoring of the parameters for the last fortnight has shown that the activity was characterized by a process of pulsatile nature with periods of greater surface activity and other more balanced, preserving a qualitatively high seismicity, but low energy. This suggests a predominance of the activity of surface hydrothermal system and the presence of a magmatic small body underlying who has not yet reached the surface layers of the volcano, so that the interaction between both systems and heat flow does not allow a permanent imbalance. In this scenario, the ability to generate new phreatic explosions and / or phreatomagmatic eruptions since the currently active craters persists.
Therefore the level of volcanic alert level remains at yellow.

Dukono , Indonésia :

Based on analyses of satellite imagery and wind data, and information from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 9-13 and 15 March ash plumes from Dukono rose to altitudes of 2.4-3 km (8,000-10,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 45-100 km S, SW, W, and NW.

Reports from this remote volcano in northernmost Halmahera are rare, but Dukono has been one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. More-or-less continuous explosive eruptions, sometimes accompanied by lava flows, occurred from 1933 until at least the mid-1990s, when routine observations were curtailed. During a major eruption in 1550, a lava flow filled in the strait between Halmahera and the north-flank cone of Gunung Mamuya. This complex volcano presents a broad, low profile with multiple summit peaks and overlapping craters. Malupang Wariang, 1 km SW of the summit crater complex, contains a 700 x 570 m crater that has also been active during historical time.

The volcanic activity is moderate to high.
