PlanchonPeteroa volcanic complex (February 16 to 29).

The level of activity of the volcanic complex is at:
YELLOW level: changes in the behavior of volcanic activity -Time For a probable eruption: weeks / months.

Based on the analysis of information obtained from monitoring equipment and surveillance of the volcanic complex, the National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) through the Volcanological Observatory of Southern Andes (OVDAS) announces:
During the reporting period, thirteen (13) events related to rock fracturing process (called volcano-tectonic, VT) with a maximum local magnitude of M 1.1  were recorded. Similarly, it was ranked seven thousand three hundred and one (7301) earthquakes associated with fluid dynamics inside the volcano (called long-period events LP), with local magnitudes (ML) to lower values M 0.7 and a reduced displacement (DRC) below 1,7cm2.
The images from the IP camera showed a small white degassing of the main crater, first suggesting the presence of water vapor. These discharges have reached a maximum altitude of about 400m above the crater.


The images published by the Sulfur Dioxide Group (ozone monitoring instrument: and NESDIS (National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information: IMO Group http: // satepsanone. reported no abnormal emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere in the area of the volcanic complex.
Thermal radiation released by the MODVOLC (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) MODIS on its website ( and Mirova (Middle InfraRed Observation of Volcanic Activity) on its website (http: / /, surveillance systems that indicate significant changes in surface temperature, reported no heat alert in the area associated with the volcanic complex.

There are no reports of local authorities or community, about perception of anomalies in the volcanic area.
Although the recorded events have low energy levels, the gradual increase in the occurrence of events associated with fluid activity indicates that the system appears above the volcanic activity base level, without still unbalanced.
In this scenario, there is a possibility of occurrence of small ash emissions. Therefore the level of volcanic alert level remains at Yellow.

Santiaguito , Guatemala :

Activity type : Pelean.
Morphology : dacitic dome complex.
Location Geographical: 14 ° 44’33 « N Latitude 91 ° 34’13 » West Longitude.
Elevation: 2500m

The Observatory of the Santiaguito volcano reporte moderate explosion that generated the collapse of Caliente dome causing descent of pyroclastic flows on the side North-East of the Santiaguito volcano. This explosion also generated thick plumes of ash that covered the completely volcanic complex.



The ash column reached an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level and moves in the North-East direction from the volcano. It is possible that ash falls occur in the areas of Quetzaltenango , St. Mark Palajunoj and, because of the wind direction, they are likely to spread to the flank South East of the volcano.
This activity Santiaguito volcano will continue to generate such events during the next hours.

Therefore, INSIVUMEH recommends:
At the CON RED, to take precautions, especially in areas near the volcanic complex because of ash fall.
At DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AVIATION, take precautions with the air traffic because of the ash cloud, which moves in the direction of the North-East at a height of 4000 meters.

Bulletin activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, 1 to 7 March 2016

Activity level Yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO reports:

During the last week, the volcanic system continued to show unstable behavior. The recorded seismic activity was mainly associated with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, and was characterized by the occurrence of earthquakes long period (LP) and short volcanic tremor pulses with significant levels of energy , some of them associated with ash emissions. Continued episodes of tremor were also recorded. These seismic signals were mainly located near the Arenas crater and in the South and Southeast areas of the volcano. These processes were accompanied by thermal anomalies, which were identified by monitoring the satellite images provided by different agencies. A weak thermal anomaly on March 6, was identified near the Arenas crater, confirming the instability of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano and corroborates that the process continues to evolve.

Seismic activity related to the fracturing of the rock in the volcanic structure is mainly located in the North and North-distal sectors and, to a lesser extent, scattered in the North-East areas, South East of the Arenas crater and close to the crater. The depth of the earthquake was between 1.19 km and 7.43 km. The largest seismic event of the week was 1.7 M (locally) on March 5 at 17h02 (local time), located in the distal part of the North sector compared to the Arenas crater at a depth of 6.42 km.

The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images, which record changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively) during the last evaluation period continues to make changes.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of steam and water gas, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as has been estimated by the permanent stations SCAN DOAS installed in the Volcano area and on satellite imagery.
The column of gas, steam and ash reached a maximum altitude of 3,000 meters above the volcano’s summit on March 3. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest over the volcano.

Sangay, Ecuador :

Increase in eruptive activity.

Sangay volcano, located on the southeast flank of the Cordillera Real, is one of the most active eruptive centers of Ecuador. He recorded a constant activity since 1628 (Hall, 1977). The Geophysical Institute maintains a permanent monitoring of the volcano, to identify periods of crisis presented by the Sangay. In previous periods, by overflights, it was found that during the eruptive phases, its common type of strombolian activity was characterized by the emission of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, lava domes and emissions of gas and ash columns that generally fail to affect populated areas.



Last activity period of the Sangay began in January 2015, which lasted until mid-April 2015. During this period, there were two small lava flows reached several hundred meters below the level of the crater central. There had also been eruptive columns that were recorded with a moderate load of ash, which did not reach inhabited areas.
After this eruptive episode, the internal and surface activity of the volcano area was returned to its base level until March 5, 2016 when he began recording sporadic seismic events, as shown in Figure 1.

However, it should be noted that from the 8 and 9 March, the seismicity is much larger, with the presence of long period events (February 31 and March 9), some tectonic volcanic earthquakes and signs of small explosions (11 since March 7), as well as small episodes of tremor.

Figure 3 shows a seismic signal today at 15:35 (10:35 local time), where an explosion followed by an harmonic tremor with a frequency of 1 Hz (Figure 3) is recorded.

On the other hand, the NOAA satellite images show a thermal anomaly today, with an emission at 02h05TL, heading south.
With this new anomaly, it is necessary to maintain constant surveillance, especially because of the presence of emission columns that on the one hand can reach populated areas, depending on the wind direction and on other hand can disturb air traffic.
It is important to note that it is not appropriate to get on the volcano during the duration of this abnormality.
