Preliminary report of activity of Nyiragongo volcano, February 29 to March 2, 2016.

Since Monday, February 29, 2016, at about 4 am, we were alerted by the Virunga National Park, station operators and the surrounding population on the Nyiragongo for volcanic rumbling sound every minute over the volcano.
On urgent request of the provincial committee of Security in North Kivu, the team of scientists of the Volcanological Observatory of Goma   who sits atop of the crater of Nyiragongo since 1 March 2016 was able to make direct observations of the activity of the volcano lava lake.

 

Preliminary results of these observations are:
Appearance of a secondary lava lake on the east side of Nyiragongo crater.
Weakening of the eastern part and collapses of the platforms, often the cause of rumblings heard by the surrounding population to the volcano

NYIRAGONGO
The manifestation of this new active secondary lava lake is in the extension of the fracture that connects the Nyiragongo to its adventitious cone Baruta, in the direction of the Kibumba area.

Conclusion:
Nyiragongo volcano is in a phase of intense activity and requires special attention.
This activity is concentrated in the central crater towards the east (towards Kibumba area) where a new secondary lava lake was observed.

The rumor of an eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano has created panic Monday, March 7 in the town of Goma in North Kivu.
Local sources report that the vendors closed their shops while some residents have headed towards Kitshanga in Rutshuru territory.
For their part, the Goma Volcano Observatory scientists ensures that there was no volcanic eruption. They indicate that since 28 February, intense activity is observed in the crater of Nyiragongo.

Scientists at the observatory are asking residents not to panic and go about their normal activities.
They handed Monday afternoon to vice governor of North Kivu, Feller Lutahichirwa a report on the activity of the Nyiragongo volcano.
The last eruption of this volcano occurred in 2002. It had caused enormous damage in the city of Goma, displacing nearly half a million people.

Lokon-Empung , Indonesia :

On March 7 until 24.00 pm, it was recorded three distant tectonic earthquakes (TJ), 25 volcanic earthquakes (VA), 138 shallow volcanic earthquakes (VB) 23 earthquake swarms. Continuous volcanic tremor vibration was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 0.5 to 4 mm.

EVALUATION

The activity of G. Lokon in the period from February 5, 2016 until March 7, 2016 did not visually indicated any anomalies or significant changes in the crater. The activity is currently dominated by high seismicity, emission gusts that reached 200 m above the crater.

Evaluation data in the period from 5 February to 7 March 2016 can be described as follows:

Volcanic earthquakes, volcanic earthquakes shallow (VB) have increased since March 6, 2016, with the onset of 98 events. According to calculations, the volcanic energy also show an increase. The value of the tremor has also experienced an increase in value of maximum amplitude. The volcanic activity of Lokon during the period from 5 February to 7 March 2016 was characterized by shallow earthquakes (VB) as well as phreatic eruptions (steam explosion) suddenly occurring, especially during heavy rainfall.

Earthquakes dominant frequencies which have been detected in the period from 24 February to 7 March 2016 were generally on higher frequency to 8 Hz (high frequency). Physically, the high frequency content of volcanic activity indicates a fracture of rocks due to the increased pressure.
The measurement of the deformation for the Y / radial axis (crater) shows changes that indicate the inflation of Lokon. Inflation can occur due to the increased pressure under the surface due to fluid dynamic movement magmatic / hydrothermal. As for the X axis / tangential (perpendicular crater), it showed no significant change.

 

 

CONCLUSION

The results of the evaluation of data on visual observations, seismicity and deformation during the period from February 5 to March 7, 2016 have shown that the activity of Mount Mount Lokon has increased significantly. Therefore, the level of activity of Mount Lokon Empung is raised from level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga) on March 8, 2016 at 14:00.

Intensive monitoring conducted to assess the activity of Mount Lokon and distribution of information about the danger of the eruption of Mount Lokon continue regularly.

SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE VOLCANO

The volcanic activity is moderate to high.
During last night incandescent blocks where ejected up to 2000 meters below the summit and largest pyroclastic flows which descended on all sides of the volcano, up to 1500 meters below the summit were recorded.
Emissions continue today and reached a height of 6000 meters above the crater to the southeast. Ash falls in Bilbao, Palitahua and Chontal have been reported.


TECHNICAL AND OBSERVATIONS APPENDIX
Seismicity:
From 11:00 (TL) yesterday until 11:00 (TL) today, 38 episodes of tremor emission (TREM) lasting from minutes to hours, 41 explosions (EXP), 108 events Long Period (LP ), 2 harmonic tremor (TA) were recorded.
Observations of emissions and ash.
During the night, a night glow was observed in the crater and the projection of blocks up to 2 km. Pyroclastic flows were generated, the largest reached 1,500 meters below the summit and descended on all sides of the volcano. On this day pyroclastic flows descended in the ravines of Mandur, Romero, Bilbao, Jewish and Achupashal. The last, most important, reached 2,200 meters below the crater.

Continued emissions persist as the previous days, today, these emissions have been characterized by a Southeast direction from the volcano, at different heights, the highest reaching 6,000 meters above the crater.
It has been reported ash fall in areas of Bilbao, Palitahua and Chontal.
Rain and lahars:
There are no reports of rains or lahars.

Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions, hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. According to video data, an incandescence of the dome lava blocks and moderate gas-steam activity were observing all week; gas-steam plume containing small amount of ash extended for about 54 km to the southeast from the volcano. Satellite data by KVERT showed an intensive thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week.
