Sabancaya , Peru :

The recording of LP type earthquakes (associated with a fluid passage) shows a slight increase in average from a rate of 14 LP / day (Report No. 8-2016) to 19 LP / day during this week, while maintaining low power.
No hybrid type of event (associated with the ascent of magmatic material) for that period.
The type of VTPS earthquakes  (proximalTectonic Volcano, distant less than 6 km from the crater), for the second week declined and recorded a similar rate to the previous week (6 VTP / day) on average. Meanwhile, the VTD events (distalVolcano Tectonic) remain numerous, although they decreased in amplitude compared to last week.

Tremor type of events (TRE) recorded in this period remained similar to those recorded last week (18 TRE / day) on average. In addition, a slight decrease was observed in the last two days of this period. On the other hand, energy remains at low levels.
Earthquakes are distributed primarily located in the Northeast region, 13 km from the volcano’s crater.

9 VTP events (called proximal) were located in a smaller radius, 6 km. These earthquakes were dispersed manner , distributed without showing any group defined. From these VTP events , an important event was highlighted with a magnitude of 3.3 ML, registered on February 27 at 19:21 hours UTC, with a depth of 18 km under the volcano.

Seismicity VTD (distal seismicity) reached a total of 401 events and was distributed by forming a pronounced focus on the Northeast area of ​​the volcano’s crater. Three events of M4.2 magnitude , M3.9 and M3.6 are distinguished; the first event was recorded on February 28 at 14:50 UTC, the second, on February 24 at 18:01 UTC and the third on February 23 at 1:54 p.m. UTC, at depths ranging from 11 km to 13 km.

Fumarolic activity:

• Frequency: During the passages of greater visibility  , there was noted the steam fumaroles expulsion with low to medium densities. Cloud cover prevented during much of this period better and complete view of the volcano.
• Colour: persisted since the early white fumaroles on Sabancaya.
• Height: Regarding the maximum height of emissions observed during this period (February 23 to 29), they ranged from 600 to 800 meters above the base of the crater.

Satellite Surveillance:

SO2 anomalies: The satellite system GSDMNASA « EOS Aura » (Http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) shows no significant density values of SO2.
Thermal anomalies: The Mirova system (www.mirovaweb.it) has not detected by thermal anomalies in the reporting period.

INETER reported that the lava lakes in three vents on the floor of Masaya’s Santiago crater were active during 20 February-1 March. Volcanic tremor remained high and RSAM values were at high to very high levels. On 23 February small explosions ejected spatter onto the crater floor.

 

During fieldwork volcanologists observed active lava lakes in all three vents on the crater floor, and noted that the inner walls of the crater were being eroded due to the lava lake. A new vent was forming on the SE part of the crater floor. During a second visit on 24 February INETER staff noted that the vents had become larger due to landslides on the crater walls. Small streams of lava sporadically originated from the NE vent. By 1 March the two vents in the SW part of the crater had almost merged.

Column of ash volcano Nevado del Ruiz reached three thousand meters

3 MARCH 2016. On Thursday, a new issue of ash in the Nevado del Ruiz volcano was recorded. This time the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Manizales reported that volcanic tremor signal was present, which is associated with the emission of gases and ash into the atmosphere.

According to the authorities the ash column reached the three thousand meters high and it is possible that it will fall in the departments of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindio.

Due to ashfall, air operations were canceled as the ash is covering the route Bogota – Manizales – Bogota. This closure st Airport La Nubia caused the Minister of Commerce, Cecilia Alvarez, canceled his schedule in the capital of Caldas.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:

During the last week, the volcanic system continued to show unstable behavior. The recorded seismic activity is mainly associated with the fracturing of the rock in the volcanic structure. This type of seismicity is mainly located in the distal areas of North and West, and to a lesser extent and spread throughout the Southeast areas , the Northeast and Northwest areas compared to the Arenas crater and near the crater. The depths of earthquakes vary between 0.4 km and 8.8 km. The appearance of multiple fracture type of earthquakes increased during the 23, 24 and 26 February  , located in the distal areas of the North (7.9 km from the crater) and South (2.3 km from the crater). The largest seismic event of the week was of magnitude 2.4 ML (local) on February 24 at 4:44 p.m. (local time), located North of Arenas crater at a depth of 5.1 km.

 

nevadoSeismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was characterized by the occurrence of earthquakes long period (LP), short pulses of volcanic tremors and some continuous tremors episodes with importants energy levels , some associated with ash emissions. These seismic signals were mainly located near the Arenas crater and in the South and Southeast areas of the volcano.
The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images, which record changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively) during the last evaluation period continues to make changes.

The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of steam and water gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2)which is distinguished as it was estimated by the permanent stations DOAS SCAN installed in the volcano area and satellite imagery.
The column of gas, steam and ash reached a height of 1,700 meters above the summit of the volcano on 25 February. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest over the volcano.

SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE VOLCANO

The activity of the volcano is moderate.
Yesterday continued emissions were observed with a moderate load of ash up to 2 km towards the west. At night, a glow could be seen in the crater, and the emission of incandescent blocks up to 500 meters below the summit.
In the early hours of the morning continued emissions were observed with a light load of ash that reached a maximum height of 1000 meters above the crater. At the moment the volcano is covered.
It has been reported ash fall in areas of Chontapamba, Pillate, Bilbao and Chacauco.

Seismicity:
