Activity Summary:
Eruptive activity continues at Kilauea Volcano’s summit and East Rift Zone. Seismicity and deformation rates throughout the volcano remain at background levels. Scattered lava flow activity continues on the June 27th lava flow field within about 6 km (4 mi) northeast of Pu’u ‘O’o. These flows currently pose no threat to nearby communities.

Summit Observations:
The lava lake within the Halema’uma’u Overlook crater remains active and was measured at 38 m (125 ft) below the crater rim when it was last measured yesterday. No significant change in tilt was observed at summit tiltmeters over the past day. Seismicity is within normal, background rates with tremor fluctuations associated with lava lake spattering. The summit sulfur dioxide emission rate averaged 5,300 metric tons/day on January 21 and 22.

Pu’u ‘O’o Observations:
Webcam images over the past 24 hours show persistent glow at long-term sources within the crater and from skylights in the lava tube on the northeast flank of the cone. Seismic activity remains low at Pu’u ‘O’o. A tiltmeter on the cone recorded no significant change in tilt over the past day. The sulfur dioxide emission rate from all East Rift Zone vents was about 220 metric tons/day when it was last measured on January 21.

June 27th Lava Flow Observations:
Webcam images show continued surface flow activity on the June 27th flow field, with smoke plumes where lava is igniting forest. The active flows are confined to within about 6 km (4 mi) northeast of Pu’u ‘O’o and are not currently threatening any nearby communities.

Activity Summary:
Mauna Loa is not erupting. No significant change in seismicity was recorded beneath the volcano in the past week. In the past week, earthquakes at Mauna Loa occurred mostly beneath the volcano’s south caldera and upper Southwest Rift Zone at depths less than 5 km (3 mi). Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements show deformation related to inflation of a magma reservoir beneath the summit and upper Southwest Rift Zone, with inflation recently occurring mainly in the southwestern part of the magma storage complex.

This aerial view of Mauna Loa’s summit shows the cinder-cone and lava flows that were erupted in 1949. The crack extending down the left side of the cone is the northeast-southwest trending 1984 fissure that bisected the southwest flank of the cone during the initial phase of the eruption. Light-brown tephra erupted from the 1949 cone thins to the west. The steep caldera walls north (right) of the cone are 70 m (230 feet) high.

 

Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on our planet, rising gradually to 4,170 m (13,681 ft) above sea level. Its long submarine flanks descend an additional 5 km (3 mi) below sea level to the ocean floor. The ocean floor directly beneath Mauna Loa is, in turn, depressed by the volcano’s great mass another 8 km (5 mi). This places Mauna Loa’s summit about 17 km (56,000 ft) above its base. The enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawaiʻi.

Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984.

Activity Update:
All volcanoes monitored by CalVO using telemetered, real-time sensor networks exhibit normal levels of background seismicity and deformation. Volcanoes monitored include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Lassen Volcanic Center, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes.

Observations for January 1, 2016 (0000h PST) through January 31, 2016 (2359h PDT):


Mt Shasta: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Medicine Lake: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Lassen Volcanic Center: Eleven M1.0 or greater earthquakes were detected, with the largest registering M2.26. Many of these events occurred during two minor seismic swarms on January 2, 2016 near the Shasta-Tehama-Plumas County lines about 12 km northeast of the town of Mineral and on January 10-11, 2016 near the Tehama-Plumas County line about 15 km east of the town of Mill Creek.
Clear Lake Volcanic Field: Two earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected. The largest was M1.18. [Note: The typical high level of seismicity was observed under the Geysers steam field located at the western margin of CLVF. The largest event was M2.95].

Long Valley Volcanic Region: In Long Valley Caldera, 7 earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected. The largest event registered M1.81. In the Mono Craters region, 5 earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected, with the largest registering M2.59. One earthquake of M1.0 or greater was detected under Mammoth Mountain (M1.16). [Note: The typical high level of seismicity was observed south of the caldera in the Sierra Nevada range. The largest event registered M2.17].
Ubehebe Craters: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Salton Buttes: Three earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected. The largest registered M2.06.
Coso Volcanic Field: The typical high level of seismicity was observed, with 9 earthquakes M1.0 or greater. The largest registered M2.31.

Activity Update:
All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background levels of seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon.

 

Recent observations:
Monitoring systems show that activity at Cascade Range volcanoes during the past week remains at background levels. On Tuesday, a few very small earthquakes were located just southwest of the summit of Mount Rainier.
