Bulletin of activity extraordinary of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, December 20, 2015
  The level of activity : Yellow or (III) remains: changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO reports:

This December 20, today at 12:47 (local time) until the time of issue of this newsletter, a seismic volcanic tremor signal with variable energy values is recorded. This signal was associated with an significant emission of ash into the atmosphere, which was confirmed by officials reports and photographs of Los Nevados National Park, staff ASDEGUIAS, workers of Cerro El Recreo  , people living near the volcano and the city of Manizales. Associated with issuing and ash fall, there have been many reports of strong smell of sulfur. The SO2 concentration values recorded by the permanent DOAS stations installed in the volcano area, note the highest values measured so far in the monitoring of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in its current activity cycle.


This activity is part of the instability encountered by the volcano since 2010 and this year has been highlighted by the continuous and important recording of ash emissions processes, associated with tremor signals, as has been reported by weekly newsletters published on the site.


If you experience ash fall, please, report it to SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO at its headquarters in the city of Manizales. It is recommended that the authorities and the community to continue to be in alert to any change in the activity of the volcano and consider recommendations for such events, including the use of masks. Do not rule out that other changes may occur in the behavior of volcanic activity that would indicate a greater system instability.

The SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO closely follows the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will continue to report timely to the changes that may occur.

Decrease of eruptive phase.

The eruption of the Fuego volcano recorded a decrease in its phase of activity which had increased since December 14. This eruption was the 13th in 2015 and on December 17th, the activity is back within its normal range, according to the daily bulletin of the Volcanological Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanologia, Meteorología e Hidrología -INSIVUMEH-.
The information shared by the scientific body of the Sistema Nacional para la Coordinadora de Desastres ReducciónCONRED, said that small white plumes are observed, rising to a height of 4200 meters above sea level and propagating towards the West and the Southwest.



Fuego volcano present 4-5 explosions per hour, which leads to emission of a gray ash column to a height of 4,400 to 4,500 meters above sea level, with a dispersion range of 8 to 12 kilometers to the west and the southwest. The explosions generate low sounds like those of locomotives. In areas near the Fuego volcano observatory, low ash falls were recorded.
The Executive Secretariat of CONRED through the departmental delegates and INSIVUMEH maintain the surveillance of Volcan Fuego.
For the general population, it is advisable to pay attention to information from the authorities, and to avoid putting lives at risk and report any incident to the telephone number 1566 which is accessible 24 hours a day throughout the country.
At the Directorate General of Civil Aviation -DGAC-, it is advisable to take precautions with the air traffic in the Volcan de Fuego area because of the ash remains stagnant after the eruption of yesterday.

Sinabung, Indonésia :


The eruption, characterized by slow extrusion of viscous lava, continues well into its second year. During the past days, incandescent avalanches, but also explosions (from pressurized gas-rich magma) have occurred, producing small to moderate ash plumes rising up to 2-3 km.


Based on information from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that on 13 December an ash plume from Sinabung rose to an altitude of 4.3 km (15,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW. On 15 December an ash plume rose to an altitude of 4 km (14,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 75 km W.
