Weekly Activity Bulletin volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from October 13 to October 19, 2015.

Yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO through the OBSERVATORIO VULCANOLÓGICO Y SISMOLÓGICO OF MANIZALES, reports that:

During the last week, the volcanic system continued to show unstable behavior. The recorded seismic activity was mainly due to the fracturing of the rock in the volcanic structure. This type of seismicity was in the North, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest, and to a lesser extent near the Arenas crater. The depths vary between 0.9 and 8.5 kilometers. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.8 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake on October 13 to 11:28 p.m. (local time) at a depth of 2.7 kilometers.


Seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, was characterized by the recording of LP type earthquakes (long period) and episodes of volcanic tremor of short duration. These episodes were associated with emissions of gases and ash in the atmosphere, which could be verified by web cameras installed in the volcano area, the official reports of NNNP and technical staff during field work in the area of ​​influence of the volcano. Seismicity related to fluid circulation is mainly located in the southeast area of ​​the Arenas crater and nearby. The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, GNSS stations and satellite images, which record changes in tilt, position and shape of the volcano, during the last assessment period showed no change major.

The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere of significant amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2). The column of gas, steam and ash reached a height of 1800 meters above the volcano’s summit on October 17. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in harmony with the wind regime, which during the week showed a variable direction, but with a tendency towards the northwest flank of the volcano.


The SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO through the OBSERVATORIO VULCANOLÓGICO Y SISMOLÓGICO OF MANIZALES, continued to lead the process of socialization of technical information with various stakeholders in the risk management; communities who have been informed during the last week were the municipalities of Ambalema and Venadillo in the department of Tolima. Thereupon, the Colombian Geological Service has been able to achieve all the different municipalities of the region on the threat of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.
While the volcano Nevado del Ruiz to date remains at yellow activity, it is possible that additional changes occur in the behavior of volcanic activity, indicating greater system instability and may imply changes in the activity level.

 The Unidad Estatal de Protección Civil de Colima reported that on 6 October scientists conducted an overflight of Colima and noted that the summit crater was 200 m wide and 50 m deep. Explosions had excavated parts of the crater, exposing the inner wall stratigraphy in the W and N parts of the crater.



Fumarolic plumes rose from vents outside of the crater and from the SE interior. Weaker fumarolic activity was present in the NE and W sectors. An explosion on 5 October had produced a small pyroclastic flow that had traveled 2.1 km down the flanks. The report reminded the public to stay at least 5 km away from the crater, and 12 km away in the Montegrande drainage. Based on satellite images, wind data, webcam views, and notices from the Mexico City MWO, the Washington VAAC reported that during 13-16 and 18-19 October ash plumes from Colima rose to altitudes of 5.5-6.7 km (15,000-22,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW and NW.

On 14 October the GeoNet Data Centre reported a recent slight intensification of activity at White Island. Increased amounts of CO2 emitted from one of the large accessible fumaroles was detected on 1 October along with a temperature increase. SO2 emissions at the volcano also increased. On 8 October volcanic tremor magnitude strengthened and became banded (the signal disappeared and reappeared every few hours), commonly noted during eruptions and periods of unrest.

Two DOAS SO2 gas spectrometers are installed on the island and under favorable conditions measure the sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas output. This has averaged around 300 tons per day this year, ranging from 120 to 750 tons per day during the last month. About once a month we make airborne measurements of sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) outputs. This year these have averaged about 350 t/day for SO2, 1180 t/day for CO2 and 8.5 t/day for H2S. During our most recent flight on October 7 we measured 525 t/day of SO2, 1800 t/day of CO2 and 10.5 t/day of H2S. Both the SO2 and CO2 show increases.

During visits to the island in October, GeoNet staff have also sampled and measured the lake temperature (54°C) and it remains similar to other recent measurements. However the lake level has risen about 2 metres since June. Since the lake re-established in late 2013 we have measured a rise of about 6m.

The Volcanic Alert Level remained at 1 and the Aviation Colour Code remained Green.
