Well well well…. I’m back at the helm, after Indonesian « Tiga Bintang«  tour – hectic, or your servant breathed his annual dose of sulfur dioxide. My little lungs are on top for winter. Yep, the color of this volcanic year was yellow, not red

But in the world of volcanoes, what happened during these holidays?

Special Volcanic Activity Report (REAV)

Bío Bío Region October 1, 2015 4:00 p.m. HL.

The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) and its National Volcanic Monitoring Network, through its Volcanological Observatory of Southern Andes (OVDAS), announced that:

 Around 10:58 hl today, there has been a significant change in the internal activity of the volcano Copahue, represented by the recording of a continuous seismic tremor signal (related to fluid dynamics inside the volcano) with a reduced displacement of  1,6cm2   (value considered as low to moderate  ) by the reference station, which persists at the time of issuance of this report.



Note that this type of seismic signals accompanying eruptive activity of episodes of instability as above , with pulsating explosions and ash emissions from the crater. Therefore, it is interpreted that this type of seismic activity is related to the mobilization of magmatic material at surface levels and the disruption of deep hydrothermal system, increasing the possibility of generation of new explosions in the crater  .In the current scenario, the volcanic hazard to adjacent and proximal areas of the crater remains and consequently it is recommended that a 2.5 km exclusion zone around the crater El Agrio persists .The technical warning level   remains yellow.

The SERNAGEOMIN – OVDAS continuously monitors with particular attention the Copahue volcano, and timely inform on possible changes in his activity .

Telica , Nicaragua :

INETER reported that a 30-minute period of moderate-intensity explosions at Telica began at 0800 on 23 September. Abundant gas-and-ash emissions initially rose 400 m above the crater and drifted WNW, but then decreased to 50 m. Ashfall was reported in the community of Guanacastal. Explosions occurred at 16h45 and 16h48.



Scientists conducting fieldwork observed deposits on the crater floor from an inner-wall landslide that had occurred on 17 July, and new fumaroles on the crater floor. Five explosions were detected on 24 September. Based on wind and satellite data, the Washington VAAC reported that on 26 September ash plumes rose as high as 3.6 km (12,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W and N. During 28-29 September INETER noted that voluminous gas plumes rose from two vents on the crater floor.

Activity Bulletin Friday, October 2, 2015 at 07h00 (Local time)
The eruption that began on August 24, 2015 at 18:50 continues.

Geophysical and geochemical indicators showed that last week (September 24 October 1) some evolutions.

Since September 24, 2015, seismic activity evolves slowly rising. The three closest stations  near the active vent registered during this week a change of approximately 10-15% in intensity. Please note, we can not exclude that the relatively high rainfall this week are part of the cause.



Fig  1 : RSAM (seismic intensity) recorded by the Station Rivals since the beginning of the eruption. 1-5 compartments are described in the bulletin of 24 September 2015. The compartment 6 is the increasing trend observed over a week.

After showing significant signs of inflation, the deformation measurements show since September 27 a tendency to deflation (which remain to be confirmed in time) including summital and distal area. This trend is less marked at the base of the summit cone.
Because of the poor conditions, gas flow measurements using NOVAC stations are quite rare. However, these few measures show a slight increase flows of SO2 content in the plume.
At the top, CO2 measurements, tend to show that the deep degassing continues.

The CO2 values in soil (including the Plain of Palmiste and Gîte du Pas de Bellecombe) amounted for 10 days.

In summary, geophysical and geochemical indicators remain at a high level with a slight tendency to increase apart from measures of the distortion at the top (which remain to be confirmed in the coming days).


On the eruptive site:

For a week the weather conditions are very bad on the Piton de la Fournaise (265 mm of rain on the rainfall station Soufriere). Taking advantage of low clouds, on Sunday, September 27, a team of OVPF / University of Reunion (LGSR) could collect gas and lava samples and make the following phenomenological observations:

–  Lava fountains are always visible,
– The eruptive cone is still very impressive,
-the setting up mechanism of many « small » lava flows from the (s) tunnel (s) is still active. The two longer flows (first towards the wall that skirts the lava field from the west and a second that goes to the east) are chenalisées. Flows fronts are no longer active (ie the flows are not progressing).
The white plume was still visible on Sunday.

Rare gaps in the clouds allowed to make a few additional observations (in the same trend) during the week by using cameras (mainly Piton Bert and Piton Basaltes).
