Japan: Mount Meakan in Hokkaido is passed from the warning level 1 to level 2 after a field survey which found an increase in volcanic activity through increased fumaroles with a the rise in temperature near the craters and a significant increase in shallow earthquakes!


The swarm follows a gradual increase in seismicity under the volcano noted since April this year. JMA thinks the most likely outcome is a very small (phreatic) eruption in the near future and recommends not to approach the crater within 500 m.

Volcano‘s activity level of Nevado del Ruiz:

Yellow Activity Level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano,the SERVICIO Geologico COLOMBIANO through the OBSERVATORIO VULCANOLÓGICO Y SISMOLÓGICO OF MANIZALES, reports that:

During the last week, different monitoring parameters show that the volcanic system remains unstable. Seismicity was mainly associated with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits. This activity is mainly located in the crater, east and south of it and was characterized by recording of multiple episodes of volcanic tremors, which are associated with the movement of fluids, gases and emissions of ash in the atmosphere.


In addition, has continued the registration of seismic activity associated with the fracturing of the rock in the volcanic structure. Earthquakes are located mainly in the Northeast and the Southwest, at a depth between 1.5 and 7.5 kilometers. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 2.2 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake located in the northeast of the Arenas crater, which took place on July 27 at 2:08 (local time) a depth of 3.48 km. Continuous volcanic deformation show some changes.

The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere a significant amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2). As for gas and steam column, the emission of ash generated Sunday, July 26 in the morning, reaching a maximum height of 3000 meters above the summit of the volcano, could be correlated with the increase in signal seismic tremor which has increased at the time of issuance.


With web cameras that are located near the volcanic area, it was possible to observe the gas column and ash ,and from some municipalities in the departments of Caldas and Tolima. Ash falls were also confirmed by some populations in the department of Risaralda, and in nearby areas of the volcano. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in harmony with the wind regime, which remained mainly towards the northwest south-west of the volcanic edifice.

The eruption, now over 4 weeks old, continues with no significant changes. Strong lava effusion inside the summit caldera is accompanied by near-constant ash emissions rising 1-2 km and drifting up to 100-200 km in mostly westerly directions.


Based on observational data from PVMBG, the volcano emits a thick gray smoke, medium pressure, from a height of about 2,000 meters to the south – east. Volcanic tremor remains at a constant amplitude with a dominant at 27-29 mm. Energy is likely to increase through a new magma supply. But the type of eruption has not changed, still erupting continuously without a break with the Strombolian type.
